The event was open for students, academics, professionals, and the general public, and provided an important venue to learn about developments and international experiences. Based on the success of the first Seminar, more events of this kind are planned within Chile as well as further collaborations.
The 2022 EMB Bursary has been awarded to Mr Ede Kossári-Tarnik to carry out a preliminary quantitative and qualitive investigation of microplastics sampled from Maltese nearshore waters.
After the first two weeks of online training, it was finally possible to welcome the participants, to in-person training in Cape Town. Lectures were delivered by distinguished speakers from all over the region, with some presenting online. Field visits were also possible for the first time since the pandemic.
The interdisciplinary Summer School was hosted by the IOI through its centre in Germany, and with the support of the host institute Leibniz-Zentrum für Marine Tropenforschung (ZMT).

The classical diplomatic architectural dance to finalise an outcome as an International Legally Binding Instrument under UNCLOS on the conservation and sustainable use of BBNJ was continued at UN Headquarters in New York, 15-26 August, 2022. Regrettably, although not unexpectedly, and after more than a decade no final agreement was reached, reflecting the dismal status of global multilateral cooperation.
