The IOI was represented by Ms Liliana Rodriguez Cortes (Delegate of the IOI to the United Nations) at the Opening, Plenary and Interactive Dialogue of the Summit of the Future in New York.
The IOI and the University of Malta have officially extended their partnership, signing an Addendum to their agreement on October 29th. This extension ensures the continuation of the joint IOI-UM Training Programme on Regional Ocean Governance for the Mediterranean, Black, Baltic and Caspian Seas, held annually since 2005 at the Msida Campus of the University of Malta in Malta.
The IOI places great importance on creating and maintaining partnerships and collaboration in ocean governance as part of its aim to build multipartner coalitions to address critical challenges in ocean governance. Communication and outreach underpin the IOI's international meeting schedules and are critical to achieving the far reaching aims of the IOI and the global ocean community.
Organised by the Sustainable Ocean Alliance Malta Hub and coordinated by IOI alumnus Rosalyn Kamp, the event featured a screening of the powerful documentary Deep Rising, followed by a panel discussion with experts, including IOI’s Antonella Vassallo, on the urgent need for sustainable ocean governance of the deep seas.
Co-Directors of IOI Ocean Academy India, Sunil Murlidhar Shastri and Vinitaa Apte presented the IOI’s flagship Ocean Literacy programme at the 6th International Conference on Sustainability Education - Greening Education for a Sustainable Future; 19-20 Sep New Delhi, India.
The 2024 EMB Bursary is being awarded to Ms Perla Galatolo to carry out an investigation on the state of Posidonia oceanica meadows in Maltese bays subjected to anthropogenic disturbance and pollution and shall form part of a Master of Science in Cross-Disciplinary Science [Mainly by Research] with the Faculty of Science at the University of Malta.
Building on the success of the workshop series over the last two years, IOI Canada delivered another interdisciplinary 5-day workshop on Coastal and Ocean Governance for Indigenous Peoples.
The third IOI Alumni CPD webinar in the 2024 series explored the evolving geopolitical landscape of deep seabed mining, where national concerns, international regulations, and environmental stewardship intersect in complex and often contentious ways.
Dr Andrej Abramic, IOI alumnus and MSP expert member of faculty at the IOI training courses, was nominated by the IOI to present and participate at a technical workshop in Beijing, at the invitation of the IOI training partner in China, the National Marine Data and Information Service.
